The life of all living organisms depends considerably on energy. The selection of energy sources is an essential step in many ways towards maintaining the earth's natural system. To fulfill the energy demand of the society, we are excessively using fossil fuels, resulting in the emission of greenhouse gases causing global warming. It is highly essential to discover and advance in the field of sustainable energy to reduce the harmful effects on the environment and human health, it is very important. The energy sources such as solar, wind, hydrothermal, tidal, and others are considered as the sustainable energy sources. Production of renewable alternative fuels and energy storage via chemical ways or by using batteries are also considered as potential options towards attaining suitability.

The 8th Global Conference on Global Warming (GCGW 2019) was held from April 22 to 25, 2019, in Doha, Qatar. GCGW 2019 was supported by Qatar University (QU) and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF). The prime objective of the conference was to promote research in the field of renewable energy, sustainable environment, and advanced materials. More than 175 national and international participants contributed to the GCGW 2019 via 175 oral and 75 poster presentations. The conference program was the right mix of keynote and invited talks, oral, and poster presentations towards essential aspects of renewable energy, a sustainable environment, and advanced materials. Eight internationally reputed keynote and invited speakers have presented the contemporary and inventive developments in renewable and clean energy, energy storage systems, climate change, catalytic processes, hydrogen production, biofuels and bio refinery.

This special issue, “Energy Research for Better Sustainability,” contains selected papers presented at the GCGW 2019 conference. All the published papers went through a rigorous peer‐review process to improve the quality and scientific content. Novel research topics related to the solar fuels, renewable energy initiatives, CO₂ capture and conversion, electric vehicles, lithium‐ion batteries, solar desalination, supercapacitors, microbial fuel cell, bioenergy, wastewater treatment, and others are included in this SI. We are confident that the published papers are relevant to the scope of the journal and will be of interest to its readership. This special has a significant contribution in the fields of energy, environment, and materials.
