Mass transfer in soybean oil extraction using ethanol/isopropyl alcohol mixtures

Abstract An experimental and numerical analysis is presented to investigate the influence of solvent composition and temperature on mass transfer during soybean oil packed-bed extraction using ethanol/isopropyl alcohol mixtures. A finite volume-based algorithm was implemented to solve a multiscale model, allowing to calculate the oil concentration along the column length and particle radius. This model was coupled with an optimization algorithm to estimate the mass transfer coefficient and the particle effective diffusivity based on the experimental data. Correlations for both parameters were obtained and adjusted, with good fit for all cases, to a general non-linear equation where the solvent composition is used as independent variable. Results show that for ethanol-rich mixtures mass transfer is limited by convection at the solid/liquid interface, while for isopropyl alcohol-rich mixtures, internal diffusion limits the process. An economic analysis considering solvent cost associated with different extraction yields indicate that, in general, isopropyl alcohol is more suitable for low-yield extractions (less than 70%) and ethanol for high-yield extractions.
