Background: Infection is the leading cause of death after thermal injury. Optimal prevention and treatment of burn wound infection is enabled by an in-depth understanding of burn wound treatment modalities not only from a technical standpoint, but also from the standpoint of the clinical context in which these modalities were originally developed.
