In this paper, the applicability of an objective gravity wave detection method based on Gabor filter plus grating cell operators to Himawari‑8 geostationary satellite imagery is investigated for the visible, water vapor and infrared window bands. The method was originally developed for imagery of the Meteosat Second Generation geostationary satellite programme; as Himawari‑8 satellite data have higher spatial resolution, some adaptation efforts to find proper values for pixel-size-related parameters were undertaken, for each band individually. With the resulting slight modifications, it shows that the technique identifies gravity waves satisfactorily also in Himawari‑8 imagery. By comparing two variants of the grating cell operator that were previously applied in the Meteosat application, it is confirmed that the more recent version consistently yields results closer to subjective recognition.
