Where it′s happening: JAK2 is of paramount importance in erythropoietic precursor cells and its dysfunction drives myeloid cancers. Heme is accumulated by these cells in order to produce hemoglobin. Here we show that heme can drive JAK2 phosphorylation in K562 myeloid tumor cells. We identify two possible interaction sites based on distinct heme‐binding motifs, that is, cysteine‐proline and histidine‐X‐tyrosine.
