On September 23, 2020 the scientific world, and the Swiss chemistry community in particular, lost a giant with the untimely passing of Professor François Diederich. There were few individuals with his breadth of science, immense productivity, and at the same time unbounded generosity and sincere support for his students, colleagues, and society. He will be deeply missed.
We at Helvetica are grateful that we could play a tiny part in the unique community he created among all around him, through the collection and publication of a volume in honor of his retirement. The response to the call for contributions – organized by his former postdoc Professor Jean‐François Nierengarten (University of Strasbourg, Figure 1) – was a flood of high‐quality manuscripts spanning the entire field of organic chemistry11

. Contributions came not only from former students and postdocs but luminaries in his field. The collected works were presented to him as part of a three‐day symposium in his honor.22

Held last year, in 2019, it was attended by friends, co‐workers, and colleagues from academic and industry. It was touching to see the warmth and gratitude that François inspired in everyone he interacted with. It is all too clear just how many individuals will be impacted by his too early departure.
In memoriam, we invite you to take an evening – perhaps with a glass of wine in hand, as François might have enjoyed – to reflect on the indelible mark François made, not only on shaping modern organic and medicinal chemistry as we know it, but on everyone around him. He was a rare gift to ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and Science.
