I am pleased to announce the creation of the American Journal of Botany Reviews Section, which will feature timely syntheses of major issues and new insights to guide future research. One of my primary goals as Editor‐in‐Chief of the American Journal of Botany, is to ensure that the journal is serving the needs of the members of the Botanical Society of America and plant biologists generally. In wide‐ranging discussions with Associate Editors, authors, readers, and members of the society, the critical importance of reviews was mentioned repeatedly. Reviews are highly valued by students learning about a field for the first time, as well as by established scientists for thoughtful synthesis and fresh perspectives. Reviews provide the opportunity to explore newly emerging fields and to bring together research in disparate areas to generate new questions. Reviews also draw new authors and readers to the journal.

AJB Associate Editor Jannice Friedman (Queen’s University, Canada) is serving as the inaugural Reviews Editor, and BSA Director‐at‐Large for Publications Emily Sessa (University of Florida) and I are assisting as a team that collaborate to invite potential authors and assess proposed topics. Once submitted, the reviews are handled by one of AJB’s associate editors. See https://bsapubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/15372197/homepage/forauthors for details of submission.

We launch our reviews section with a timely contribution from Mark Olson (Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), “From Carlquist's ecological wood anatomy to Carlquist’s Law: why comparative anatomy is crucial for functional xylem biology”. This review focuses on the work of an eminent botanist, whose thought‐provoking work has at times been controversial. The review uses Carlquist’s research as a framework to address the integration of comparative data with that of experimental/functional approaches, fields that have often functioned independently. We hope that you enjoy reading this paper as much as we did!

We aim to ultimately feature a review in each issue. If you have an idea for a contribution or a topic that you would like to see reviewed, please contact us at reviews@botany.org.
