Shock-Wave Initiation of Exothermic Reactions in W–Al–PTFE Reactive Materials

Abstract Thermodynamic calculations of the adiabatic temperatures and probable compositions of the combustion products in the W–PTFE and W–Al–PTFE systems were performed. Powdered reactive compacts were produced. The shock-wave loading of reactive materials in the W–Al–PTFE system was studied. It was shown that the systems based on tungsten and polytetrafluoroethylene are generally difficult to initiate; nonetheless, the addition of aluminum increases their shock-wave sensitivity and makes it possible to reach the calculated combustion temperatures more than 3000 K, which enables one to consider such mixtures promising for the development of high-density reactive materials.
