High-Efficiency Hydrolysis of Thermosetting Polyester Resins into Porous Functional Materials Using Low-Boiling Aqueous Solvents

A new high-efficiency reaction system composed of aqueous ethanol-alkali solution is developed for fast and mild hydrolysis of thermosetting unsaturated polyester resins (TUPRs) into porous functional materials. Different from high-boiling alcohols in previous reports, ethanol can produce pores in the resins due to its low boiling point and thus significantly speeds up the hydrolysis of the resins. In addition, ethanol improves the surface wettability between resin and reaction reagents. It ionizes out strong nucleophile EtO to react with carbonyl groups followed by OH substitution in alkaline aqueous solution. The obtained gel products are of considerable hydrophilic groups and can reach a yield of 80% under normal pressure at 80 °C for only 30 min. More importantly, the reaction solution can be easily recycled and reused for hydrolysis of the resins while maintaining catalytic performance. This work provides a green, sustainable, and facile reaction system for recycling of TUPRs into high value-added products.
