Electro-thermal poling of a technical glass containing mobile Na+ and K+ ions is investigated in an experiment. Ex-situ analysis of the concentration profiles by means of ToF-SIMS demonstrates the formation of two zones; a zone depleted of both Na+ and K+ ions and a zone where K+ has been enriched above the bulk concentration. Theoretical analysis by means of Monte Carlo calculations are capable of rationalizing these profiles. The key to the mechanism of poling is the transient dielectric breakdown of the material leading to ejection of electrons into the anode and depletion of cations towards the cathode leaving an electroneutral zone behind.
