Characterization and valorization of natural phosphate in removing of heavy metals and toxic organic species from water

Abstract Phosphate minerals derive from marine sedimentary rocks and can be used as soil and water remediation agents. Phosphate deposits are abundant in Morocco. These rocks have important surface properties allowing a good retention of heavy metals (Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Cr6+) and organic micropollutants (phenol, pyridine, dyes and drugs), which has been well described herein. A retention mechanism model has also been proposed. Organic micropollutants can bind to the phosphate mineral surfaces but at different rates, depending on their chemical composition, whose mechanism is related to the nature of Van Der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds between different molecules. These experimental results show that phosphate minerals can be as an excellent natural agent used for remediation of contaminated soils and industrial effluents.
