During the 2019 United Nations Summit on Climate Change held in Madrid, also known as COP25, the European Commission announced new support for projects to improve soil health and fight global warming through sustainable agriculture. Discussions at the summit laid the foundation for defining the steps and guidelines necessary to ensure that agriculture and forestry practices adopt more environmentally friendly approaches. This opinion piece focuses on actions that favor the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It pays particular attention to issues related to SDG2, dealing with agriculture, food processing, food security and food safety. Within SDG2 we need to take into account that feeding the human population will require healthy soils as a way to develop sustainable agriculture. The practices required should not only produce more food from the same available land, but also be sustainable, aligned with preservation of natural resources and aimed at mitigating the effects of climatic change.
