Metal-Organic Framework-based Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), composed of organic linkers and metal-containing nodes, are one of the most rapidly developing families of functional materials. The inherent features of MOFs, such as high specific surface area, porosity, structural diversity, and tunability, make them a versatile platform for a wide variety of interdisciplinary applications. Here, we review the recent advances in thermal energy storage by MOF-based composite phase change materials (PCMs), including pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and their derivatives. At the same time, this review offers in-depth insights into the correlations between MOF structure and thermal performance of composite PCMs. Finally, future opportunities and challenges associated with MOF-based composite PCMs are discussed.
