The Making Process of Tapered Connector and Its Coupling Characteristics in Vibrating Circumstance†

Lateral displacement has a great influence on optical communication. We proposed the directional tapered fiber connector to improve the coupling efficiency. To verify its performance, we produce the sample with the flame-brush technique. In the next step, two experiments in the vibration environment are done. The first experiment shows the tapered structure could improve the optical power coupling efficiency. In addition, in this experiment, we discover only the amplitude has an obvious impact on the power coupling efficiency. The second experiment shows the bit error rate of the common receiver is higher than that of the new receiver. It indicates the new receiver performs better also. At the same time, the second experiment shows both the amplitude and frequency have obvious influence on the bit error rate result. This is different from the first experiment. The reason is owing to that the vibration frequency will change the mode of laser transmission. However, the transmission mode has an obvious impact on the bit error rate, but has little influence on the optical power coupling efficiency.
