Trend analysis of climatic variables for the subtropical region of Assam and its neighbouring states in NE India

The trend of a meteorological variable plays a significant role to determine the climatic condition of a particular region. Here, a trend analysis is done in North-East (NE) India consisting of Assam and other states which lie in a subtropical region in the southern Himalayan region. Trend direction and magnitude of five meteorological variables i.e. maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), precipitation (P), potential evapotranspiration (PET), and vapor pressure (VP) are determined using the non-parametric approach i.e. the Mann-Kendall (MK) method and the Sen’s slope (SS) test. It is found that both the Tmax and Tmin are increasing annually and the increasing rate is higher in daily Tmin as compared to daily Tmax. The results also revealed that both the annual and monsoon precipitation are decreasing significantly at 0.05 level of significance. Moreover, both the variables PET and VP are identified with a significant increasing change in the monsoon. Shifting of the observed trend in the above meteorological variables has been identified by the change point analysis. This study may be useful in many fields such as hydrological modeling, weather forecasting, watershed management, climate management as well as further research related to climate change.
