Loftus et al. (2020) offer a broad and fascinating perspective on why early forms of task allocation arise in social groups and how such allocation is maintained and even strengthened over time. This exceptional contribution takes full advantage of conceptual and statistical advances in the animal personality literature, expanding them beyond the traditional five axes of personality variation and uncovering the critical role that individuality might have for group performance. The framework opens new exciting directions in the field at a time of growing interest in the evolutionary ecology of individuality.
