Theoretical study of conditions for generation of periodic wellbore flow due to inflow of a lower-enthalpy fluid

Abstract The authors have numerically simulated periodic wellbore flow due to inflow of a lower-enthalpy fluid at a shallow feed zone, while a higher-enthalpy fluid flows in at a deep feed zone. Typical flow patterns such as constant and periodic flows appear depending on dimensionless parameters, which has been investigated extensively. Generation of the periodic flow is governed by a simple nature described using a mean specific enthalpy of the shallow and deep reservoirs weighted by their productivity indices as well as a modification factor of the weight. The findings provide a useful guideline for forecasting generation of the periodic flow as well as developing an effective mitigation measure.
