Abstract

Large subsurface streams on steep slopes have stable positions with distinct catchment areas (drainage basins), linear shapes, and lengths of tens and hundreds meters. They form a closed drainage network with a role and scale similar to the primary hydrographic network and serve as specific hydrological objects—drains. Drains are widespread in the medium-height humid mountain zone, where they account for the formation of a considerable portion of slope runoff. The hydrographic and hydrological characteristics of drains have been examined in small river basins of the Sikhote Alin with the use of field studies, hydrometric measurements, and large-scale topographic surveys.
