Allocation of resources to reproduction in plants is of key interest in both evolutionary biology and agriculture. In evolutionary biology, allocation to reproduction will determine an individual’s capacity to produce offspring and is central to individual fitness. In agriculture, seeds and fruits are the food-producing tissues in many crop species. Thus, allocation to reproduction and reproductive size are the targets of both natural and artificial selection. The modular nature of plants means that reproductive size is related to overall plant size; reproductive units (flowers or inflorescences) are formed from meristems on vegetative units, and increasing vegetative size increases the potential number of reproductive units. Importantly, the relationship between reproductive size and plant size is often allometric where reproductive size can increase disproportionately with vegetative size. In this issue of Annals of Botany, Fournier et al. (2020) examine size and phenology effects on reproduction in two blueberry (Vaccinium) species.
