Optical Resolution Studies on Ti/Zr-Based Tetrahedral Cages

In this work, we report that racemic tetrahedral [Ti4L6]8– cages (L = pamoic acid) can be successfully resolved into their ΔΔΔΔ and ΛΛΛΛ enantiomers by left-handed [Ag4(R-L1)5]4+ (R-L1 = 1R,2R-(−)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane) and right-handed [Ag4(S-L1)5]4+ (S-L1 = (1S,2S)-(+)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane) cations, respectively. Accordingly, two homochiral supramolecular compounds (PTC-232(Δ,R) and PTC-232(Λ,S)) with 2-fold interpenetrating dia-type frameworks are obtained in good yield. Similar resolution studies were also performed for the isostructural [Zr4L6]8– cages, and we synthesized two homochiral compounds (PTC-233(R) and PTC-233(S)). However, structural analysis showed that both ΔΔΔΔ-Zr4L6 and ΛΛΛΛ-Zr4L6 cages coexist in the structure of PTC-233(S), and herein no resolution occurred. Its three-dimensional packing superstructure consisted of [(ΔΔΔΔ-Zr4L6)(Λ-Mn(S-L1)3)3] and [(ΛΛΛΛ-Zr4L6)(Δ-Mn(S-L1)3)4] units. In addition, the fluorescent emission of PTC-233(S) in the solid state is also investigated.
