ABSTRACT
Potential effects of torsional components of ground motions (TGM) on the overall seismic response of symmetric skew highway bridges have been investigated. Analyses were conducted for various skew angles, plan dimensions, deck-abutment gap sizes, dynamic properties, and soil types (B and D). The models included nonlinear impact between deck-abutment explicitly. It was demonstrated that seismic response of symmetric highway bridges are amplified consistently due to TGM components for all considered parameters. It is further suggested that a systematic definition of “accidental eccentricity” in terms of system dynamics, geometry, and associated design spectral response may be used in lieu of analysis.
