Introduction for IJFE special article collection “The Role of Forest Operations in Climate Change Affected Forests”

Growing attention is being given to forest, agriculture and wood based bio-products in both policy and science, because these products are renewable, biodegradable, capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, have a wide range of utilization and thus, support the main goal to reach a sustainable and a climate neutral economy and society. However, the environment is already affected by significant changes in climate patterns worldwide which leads to the use of more challenging, more complex and thus more expensive biomass and bioenergy supply chains; for example when machines cannot access forest stands due to wet summers or winters and the operations must be carried out motor manually and with cable-yarding systems. The core question addressed within this special article collection is how climate change impacts will affect forest operations in the future. The two research articles deal with a) monoxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions generated by the engines of catalytic and conventional chainsaws and with b) forest road planning, i.e. spur roads were constructed and evaluated with regard to the effectiveness of water drain. Both topics gain in importance on operational and planning levels. Approaches like the ones presented should be considered in upcoming research and practice in order to assure sustainable forest management for the provision of forest ecosystem services.
