Abstract Venus and Earth are called sister-planets considering their similar size, and the density. It is the nearest planet to the Earth in the solar system. From 1960s various missions for exploration of the atmosphere of Venus have been carried out by USA, Europe, Russia & Japan. This paper focuses on use of Lighter-than-Air systems for exploring the atmosphere of Venus. The paper summarizes the progress of research work carried out since the 1960s till date. The paper starts with an overview of the atmospheric properties of Venus, and then describes the types of balloon missions planned & executed, choice of lifting gases & selection criteria for materials used for envelope construction. In the end, some key gaps in literature are identified which need to be filled while planning the future missions for exploration of the atmosphere of Venus.
