A review on the 2D Black Phosphorus materials for energy applications

Abstract The global energy crisis has become a major issue to get resolved immediately, and a number of researches are working on it, in order to fix these crises. The recent isolation of 2D BP, i.e. phosphorene, has shown a great hope for the solution of this problem. 2D materials are already famous since the fabrication of graphene due to their remarkable properties of stability, surface area, strength, strain, magnetic properties and flexibility, meanwhile, the fabrication of phosphorene seems like the star of the show. Numerous modifications on the black phosphorus are abridged to improve the photocatalytic activity. Different electronic and structural properties which have been studied through density functional theory (DFT) provides a better understanding about the morphology of the material as well as their use, in order to, produce sufficient energy through an eco-friendly way. A wide range of applications regarding energy harvesting has been discussed in detail, along with the morphology control of this material. It is anticipated that black phosphorus, being rising star, may be a multifunctional nanomaterial in postgraphene era.
