Magnesium oxide nanoparticles decorated iron oxide nanorods: Synthesis, characterization and remediation of Congo red dye from aqueous media

Abstract In this work, nanosized magnesium oxide decorated iron oxide nanorods (Fe2O3–MgO) were synthesized by simple one step hydrothermal method using magnesium nitrate, ferric nitrate and polyethylene glycol as starting materials. Here polyethylene glycol acts as a stabling agent. The obtained products were used as adsorbents for the elimination of toxic Congo red (CR) dye from water. TEM images showed the formation of spherical MgO nanoparticles on Fe2O3 nanorods surface. The crystal structure and surface area was described by XRD and BET analytical methods. CR adsorption mainly pH depended and maximum adsorption capacity occurred at pH 4 with adsorption capacity value 200 mg/g.
