Water use efficiency in novel integrated system of greenhouse and saltwater evaporative pond

Abstract Novel integrated system of greenhouse and saltwater evaporative pond is a new idea that has been established and designed in this study. This Integrated System utilizes a desalination approach and provides the possibility of crop growth and fresh water production by using saline water. The theory of this integrated system is that crop evapotranspiration will be reduced by controlling atmospheric factors [increasing relative humidity (RH)] in culture media. Assessing the water use efficiency (WUE) in this system will be very important. Therefore, in the present study, by implementing pilot project of this system in the southeast of Tehran, crop water requirement, crop yield and thus WUE were investigated in two periods of basil cultivation and compared with corresponding results in the open field. According to the obtained results, crop water requirement and crop yield of basil in the greenhouse culture unit of the proposed integrated system were measured 51 mm and 191 g/m2 and in the open field were measured 98 mm and 110 g/m2, respectively. Based on the results, the value of WUE in the basil cultivation increased from 1.14 kg/m3 in the open field to 3.76 kg/m3 in the greenhouse culture unit of this integrated system.
