Graft PEI ultra-antiwear nanolayer onto carbon spheres as lubricant additives for tribological enhancement

Abstract A facile and characteristic one-step emulsifier-free polymerization strategy was proposed to graft a poly (ethylene imine) (PEI) nanolayer onto carbon spheres (CS) surface, forming an amphiphilic particle, and to apply as an efficient lubricating additive to improve the tribological performances of traditional lubricating oils. Hybrid lubricants, containing carbon spheres/poly (ethylene imine) (CS-PEI) particles dispersed in engine oil, were evaluated regarding their tribological performances under ball-on-disk tribometry. The steel substrates lubricated by CS-PEI showed clearly improved, with a significant reduction in the friction and wear (15–42%). These tribological improvements were attributed to several functions of CS-PEI additives, including: Ⅰ) bearing and filling mechanisms, Ⅱ) superior wear and friction resistances, Ⅲ) formation of PEI lubrication films with lower shear-strength on contact interfaces.
