SARS-CoV-2, the causal agent of COVID-19, has become a major public health issue. The severe morbidity and mortality associated with SARS-CoV-2 necessitate the development of effective vaccines to prevent epidemics. There is an unprecedented need to produce and distribute enough safe and effective vaccines to individuals globally. Here, we discuss the challenges in several aspects including the vaccine safety, vaccine efficacy, human challenge trials and production capacity in COVID-19 vaccine development.
