ABSTRACT As a result of recent research at the Eduardo Torroja Institute for construction sciences, a new wording for the indoor air quality (IAQ) regulations for dwellings included in the Spanish Building Code has come into force with the main goal of adapting required ventilation rates to real needs to consequently achieve a reduction of energy demand with no negative impact on indoor air quality or on condensation risk. This paper summarises the research that was carried out to assess the variation in the surface condensation risk due to the reduction of the ventilation rates. A method to assess the influence of variations in ventilation on surface condensation risk was adapted. Results show how it should be possible to achieve target CO2 concentration values in addition to not significantly increase the risk of surface condensation.
