Reduction of Acridine and 9-Chloroacridine with Red Phosphorus in the KOH/DMSO System

Acridine reacts with red phosphorus in KOH/DMSO(H 2 O) system upon heating (100 oC, 3 h) to regioselectively give and 9,10-dihydroacridine in almost quantitative yields. Under similar conditions, the reaction of 9-chloroacridine with the system Pred/KOH/DMSO(H 2 O) affords 9,10-dihydroacridine and acridone in 51 and 40% yields respectively.
