What is behind a successful academic carrier? Editorial for Crystallography Reviews, Issue 3 of 2018

The Issue 3 of CrystallographyReviews presents two topical reviews and four book reviews. Oscar Enrique Piro returns with Enrique José Baran from La Plata, Argentina in this issue with a report on crystal chemistry of organic minerals, the salts of organic acids in order to understand the mutual relationship between the naturally occurring ones and the synthetic analogues, discussing their physicochemical properties, including also case studies. The current state of electron diffraction for structural biology is presented by Max T. B. Clabbers and Jan Pieter Abrahams from the Netherlands and Switzerland. The review includes descriptions about the limits of X-ray crystallography, the diffraction of electrons: the interaction of electrons with matter, data acquisition and processing showing that electron crystallography is becoming an alternative for structure elucidation of beam-sensitive organics and macromolecules. Claire Murray reviewed the book of Philip Ball on the evergreen topic ‘Patterns in nature’ completing the title with the question ‘why the natural world looks the way it does’ published by University Chicago Press. Mother Nature produces the world’s greatest art, this – often hidden – art seeks recognition and understanding, as well inspires generations of greatest artists. The book on symmetry, interesting for non-crystallographers and essential to crystallographers, will most probably attract wide readership. Large numbers of authors were involved in the preparation of the book ‘Intermolecular interactions in crystals: fundamentals of crystal engineering’ sensitively edited by Juan J. Novoa, reviewed by Susan A. Bourne, a Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, publication. The book offers the readers an overview of the current state of understanding of intermolecular interactions, the theoretical basis of supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, as well as of crystal design. The ‘Textbook of structural biology’, edited by Anders Liljas, Lars Liljas, Miriam-Rose Ash, Göran Lindblom, Poul Nissen and Morten Kjeldgaar, published by World Scientific, Singapore, has been already translated to several languages. This second editionwith broad revision makes the work to be the most extensive and detailed structural biology textbook by the reviewer, Xiao-Dong Su. Nucleic acid crystallography provides technical and practical challenges different from protein crystallography. ‘Nucleic acid crystallography: methods and protocols’ edited by Eric Ennifar in the series of Methods in molecular biology is a Springer Science Business Media, New York publication. By the reviewers, Montserrat Soler-Lopez and Gordon Leonard, the book offers an indispensable guide for nucleic acid, and particularly for RNA, cutting-edge methods and protocols to achieve reproducible results.
