A Reflection on the Modern Fuel Cells Based on Chitosan and Alginate Reinforced Biomembranes

Abstract

Although the polymer electrolyte membranes provide a comprehensive solution to fuel cell technology, it provides several complemented problems such as fuel crossovers, CO poisoning, low durability, and high cost. Recent scientific developments have focused on biopolymer membranes based on chitosan and alginates, which are addressed to meet these problems. This comprehensive review is a perspective to the researches and the scientific advents based on chitosan and alginate-based biomembranes. The paper tries to evaluate the synthesis process of the biomembranes and their effectiveness as a fuel cell performer as compared to the existing membranes. Furthermore, it tries to outlook and analyses the various chitosan derived biomembranes which find application in different fuel cells.
