Editor’s Message: Global Meetings and the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements

The International Years, proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, are intended to increase awareness of the general public about topics and events that became milestones in the development of the society, and to motivate the new generations to pursue in the actions to enrich science and culture. The International Year of Physics (2005), Astronomy (2009), Chemistry (2011), Crystallography (2014) and Light (2015), are magnificent examples of these celebrations. This year has been proclaimed as the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements (IYPT 2019), in commemoration of the sesquicentennial of its formal presentation in 1869 by Dmitri Mendeleev, which will bring the opportunity to show it everywhere, so that it become a conversation subject and inspire young people to get involved in this science that is applicable every day in chemical reactions for agriculture, medicine, biology, and renewable energies, among others. Chemical reactions usually require heating, and then studying methods to heat has been always an issue, from wood fire, the Bunsen burner to the use of microwave energy. Microwave chemistry is a proof of the popularity of this method for applying energy to chemical systems, as well as the curiosity to study its effects on the reactions. Therefore, regardless our interest in the foundations of technologies based on electromagnetic waves, we must be aware of the importance chemistry. The periodic table of the chemical elements is one of the most recognizable charts even by non-chemist people, but few years earlier to the discovering of the periodical pattern in the properties of the elements and their atomic numbers by Dmitri Mendeleev, often atoms and molecules were considered as synonymous, nomenclature of the compounds was not uniform, i.e. water was reported with two chemical formulas and acetic acid with nineteen, and Avogadro’s theory and diatomic molecules were questionable. Therefore, most chemists found necessary to establish certain rules and foundations that allow to move forward on the new theories in chemistry. It was necessary to create the frame that explained the reported results so far, without contradictions nor exceptions. The quote “A chemist that is not a physics is nothing at all” has been attributed to Robert Bunsen referring to the proposal of a separated branch of the chemistry devoted to find general laws of the chemical phenomena as in physics. August Kekul e had the idea of organizing a meeting to discuss those issues with other chemists to reach a conclusion, or at least a sort of consensus. He contacted Karl Weltzien, a chemist in Karlsruhe that had a well-established reputation at that time, and Adolphe Wurtz, so that they organized the First Congress of Chemists that was held in Karlsruhe on September 3-5, 1860.
