A simple figure of merit for devices utilizing thin film evaporation

Abstract We introduce a new figure of merit to judge the performance of two-phase capillary cooling devices working on thin film evaporation. This quantity is the heat transfer coefficient of the film thickness where the liquid pressure is zero, and represents its maximum attainable value in the thin film region. It shows good agreement with four different sources of data: data from the literature, maximum heat flux limit, interline heat flow parameter and heat pipe figure of merit, for different working fluids and a wide range of saturation temperatures. The proposed quantity is very simple, requires minimal computation, and can be used to compare the performance of different working fluids for such devices.
