Masses and Metallicity of Nova Envelopes with Carbon-Oxygen (CO) and Oxygen-Neon-Magnesium (ONeMg) White Dwarfs

The observed masses (62 stars) and metallicity (38 stars) of ejected envelopes in novae with CO and ONeMg white dwarfs are studied. The observed masses and metallicities are compared with the theoretical dependence of the mass and metallicity of an envelope on the parameter t3, which characterizes the rate of brightness decrease. The observed masses and metallicities did not have a dependence on t3 similar to the theoretical calculations. An overwhelming majority of the masses of the envelopes for given masses of the white dwarf are an order of magnitude or more greater than the theoretical values and range from 7 × 10−6M⊙to 6 × 10−4M⊙ . The metallicity of novae CO and ONeMg white dwarfs do not differ noticeably and range between 0.04 and 0.5.
