Concomitant production of bioelectricity and hydrogen peroxide leading to the holistic treatment of wastewater in microbial fuel cell

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) can commendably treat wastewater in anodic chamber with the concurrent production of bioelectricity. If the anodic effluent can be further treated in cathodic chamber through the H2O2 produced in this chamber, it can provide holistic treatment to the wastewater. In this regard, the present investigation focused on the application of Ni and Ni-Pd as cathode catalysts in MFC, which resulted in 2.2 and 2.6 times higher production of H2O2 leading to 15% and 29% higher chemical oxygen demand removal, respectively. Thus, MFCs can be effectively applied as a performant technology for providing comprehensive treatment to wastewater.
