Polydopamine-Assisted Strategies for Preparation of Fire-Safe Polymeric Materials: A Review

Abstract In recent years, the mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) has spawned considerable interest for preparing high performance flame retardant polymeric materials. In this review, the unique features of PDA and its use in polymeric materials are initially introduced. Then, the principle flame retardancy mechanisms of PDA are introduced to highlight its advantages acting as the high-efficient and non-toxic flame retardants. The main section is dedicated to recent progress of PDA-assisted strategies in developing fire-safe polymeric materials, including sponge, foam, fabric, film and polymer-matrix composite. The resultant flame retardant properties of the modified polymeric materials are summarized and the involved flame retardancy mechanisms are discussed. PDA exhibits multiple roles in different polymeric materials, including but not limited to the fire resistant coating on foams, the versatile reactive platform on fabrics, and the flame retardant additives in polymer nanocomposites. Finally, opportunities and challenges for the future use of PDA in fire-safe polymeric materials are briefly discussed.
