Fragmentation characteristics of PELE shell perforating thin metal target plate

Abstract

The impact experiment of penetrator with enhanced lateral efficiency (PELE) penetrating the metal target plate was carried out to study the fragmentation characteristics of PELE shell made of tungsten alloy. The fragments produced by PELE shell were collected by water tank and classified according to their macromorphology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the microstructures of typical fracture surfaces of the fragments. The experimental results show that the macroscopic fracture modes of PELE shell are mainly shear and tensile failure. The fragments formed by the head of PELE shell are small in size, and the fragments have obvious shear fracture surfaces or shear cracks. The PELE shell other than the head part, the larger the size of the fragments near the bottom of the shell and the smaller the number of fragments formed. The fracture modes of the tensile fracture surfaces of the fragments are mainly the cleavage fracture of tungsten particles (W-cleavage), the interfacial separation of tungsten particles and tungsten particles (W-W), and the ductile fracture of bonding phase (M). The cleavage fracture surface of elongated tungsten alloy particles can be clearly observed on the shear fracture surface of the fragments.
