The technology development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is proceeding at an unprecedented pace, with record breaking levels of funding to support unprecedented breakthroughs. As these technologies progress through technology readiness levels and make their way into the hands of human beings, however, the need for human-centered design practices will become more evident. This article briefly illustrates the emerging need for more human-AI interaction research in the Department of Defense to ensure an appropriate and cohesive integration strategy of AI in warfighting and defense sectors.
