Fabrication and characterization of functionally graded materials Ta10W-YSZ by SPS

Functionally Graded Materials Ta10W-YSZ were prepared by SPS. The obtained results demonstrated that the existence of gradient layers significantly reduced thermal stress and changed stress distribution according to thermal stress analysis. The relative density of FGM Ta10W-YSZ was 98.1% with fine grains after sintering for 10 min at 1300 °C. Ta10W completely soluble and YSZ with larger grains would be prepared by SPS at 1600 °C, and Ta10W-YSZ was asynchronous densified. During ablation, the temperature of YSZ side was above 2200 °C, while that of Ta10W was keeping at 480 °C. After 3 min ablation, there was not any ablation pits or cracks on YSZ side. EDS results of Ta10W below YSZ layer showed that the oxidation contents did not obviously changed after ablation. In order to reduce thermal stress between two adjacent layers, it would be better that the gradient in FGMs should be linearly changed in volume percentage gradient.
