We are pleased to bring to you, in this Special Section, extended versions of eight papers that were first presented at the ESSDERC’2019 Conference in Cracow (Poland). During the selection process carried out by the ESSDERC Technical Program Committee several papers were nominated within Conference Chairs structure for later presentation in this Special Section of JEDS. The Authors were notified by ESSDERC’2019 Technical Program Committee and encouraged to prepare special, significantly extended versions for this purpose. The resubmitted versions underwent a peer review process and this way we can present you this excellent set of articles. Please, enjoy the depth and variety of this small collection.
