Optimisation of structure for enhancing the room-temperature stretch formability of magnesium alloy

ABSTRACT In this study, pre-deformation followed by heat treatment for enhancing the formability of AZ31-0.5Ca magnesium alloy was investigated. For this purpose, alloy samples were subjected to tensile deformation at various amounts of strains (5%, 10%, and 15%) followed by heat treatment at 260°C for 30 min. The results showed that the 5%-deformed sample exhibited a coarser-grained structure as compared to 10%- and 15%-deformed samples and weaker basal texture as compared to that of the non-deformed sample. The evolution of such structure resulted in improved stretch formability of this alloy sample.
