A fire-retardant self-healable chitosan-based gel was fabricated from water-soluble chitosan (WSC), polyvinyl alcohol-based macromonomer (PVAM), acrylic acid (AA) and copper ion (Cu(II)) through a facile approach. Energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis results confirmed that the gel coating on polyester fabric contained N and Cu. Thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the thermal stability of the gel-coated fabric was much higher than that of fabric. Microscale combustion calorimetry measurements exhibited that the peak value in heat release rate-temperature curve of uncoated sample was around 329.5 w/g, while those for the samples obtained from 30 wt% WSC without or with Cu(II) were 197.2 or 138.9 w/g respectively. Limiting oxygen indexes of the samples were increased with increasing the WSC content or incorporating Cu(II). The increment was 2.8 or 6.3 when the WSC content was increased from 0 to 30% in the absence or presence of Cu(II). Vertical burning reflected the samples coated with the gel could self-extinguish. The fiber coated with WSC/PVAM-AA/Cu${}^{2+}$ formed from 30 wt% WSC self-extinguished around 11 s. In addition, WSC/PVAM-AA/Cu${}^{2+}$ gel showed self-healable property.
