Drowsiness is the main cause of traffic accidents. To improve safety while driving, a system to detect a decrease in drivers' awareness and to prevent drivers' drowsiness is desirable. In humans, increased skin temperature and increased heat dissipation precede the onset of sleep. The authors, with the hypothesis that control of heat dissipation affects drowsiness level, developed a heat dissipation control system. Experimental evaluation of the relationship between heat dissipation and drowsiness level suggested that control of heat dissipation is effective in preventing drowsiness. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
