Effect of oleic acid on the formation of lead zirconate titanate nanoplates

Abstract Plate-shaped Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 nanoparticles (PZT nanoplates) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method with oleic acid as a capping agent. With oleic acid, plate-shaped PZT nanoplates were obtained, whereas without oleic acid, large-sized PZT particles with rough surfaces were obtained. The sides of some PZT nanoplates synthesized with oleic acid had a unique step structure. The PZT nanoplates were characterized by various techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the carboxylate group of oleic acid is chemically bound to the surface of PZT nanoplates. Selected area electron diffraction patterns revealed that these PZT nanoplates are single crystals and their normal axis corresponds to c-axis. These findings indicated that oleic acid played an important role in the formation of the uniquely shaped PZT particles.
