A Study of the Aging Process of Bituminous Binders by IR–Fourier Spectroscopy

The effect of the short-term aging process (RTFO) on the group composition of bituminous binders containing the Polyepor-R rubber modifier and the Polyepor-RP hybrid modifier obtained by high-temperature shear grinding (HTSG) was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. IR spectra for unmodified bitumen and polymer bitumen binder (PBB) were studied for comparative analysis. The evolution of binders due to aging was studied by estimating the change in the relative optical density for the carbonyl functional group related to various chemical compounds before and after the RTFO procedure. It was found that the antioxidants included in tire rubber, which is the main raw material for producing Polyepor modifiers, have a positive effect on the resistance of modified bituminous binders to aging.
