Studies on the sustainability of vegetable oil as a biocompatible multipurpose green lubes and additives

The present paper deals with a study relating to the sustainability of cottonseed oil as biocompatible multipurpose green lubricants. The additive has been synthesized by treating one mole of polyol alcohol and five moles of tertiary ammonium salt at 60°C for 2 h. The synthesized additive and cottonseed oil have been evaluated for its physicochemical properties such as kinematic viscosity, viscosity index, density, acid value and copper strip corrosion. The cottonseed oil is blended with polyol deep eutectic solvents to investigate the tribo-performance behaviour. The anti-friction and anti-wear performance characteristics have been thoroughly investigated at the dosage of 2-5% concentration by additive weight, on a high temperature four ball test machine at 75°C and a pneumatic load of 392N. The results indicate that the cottonseed oil-Polyol deep eutectic solvent (PDES) formed a compatible blend and result in improving the wear properties. By preliminary studies carried out, the cottonseed oil and polyol deep eutectic solvents are found to have excellent potential for use as biodegradable lubricants and as antiwear additive respectively.
