Kenneth L. Mercer

When yet another journal aimed at publishing peer‐reviewed research on water quality and sustainability was launched in May this year, I admit I was frustrated. AWWA Water Science , AWWA's peer‐ reviewed title, is a young journal that doesn't yet have prestige metrics (such as an impact factor). Nevertheless, it has been getting its share of high‐quality manuscripts (thank you, authors). Still, now there is another place where important research might be published, but where it could go unrecognized by those who need it most or who could review it best.

Water professionals are busy folks, and time is always at a premium. I have a tracking list of the roughly 80 other journals that publish water‐related research, each with a title that includes water with some combination of science, engineering, technology, environment, or research . Frankly, I have a hard time keeping track of even the top 10 journals in our field; so how are others—those who are closer to developments in practice than in the lab—supposed to stay connected to vital research?

My thinking continues to evolve, but fundamentally I think it would benefit the water industry if there were greater collaboration and more transparency rather than more competition and greater dilution. Idealistic, sure, but learned societies (i.e., associations and federations) have supported research since their inception because these groups have vested interests in ensuring they disseminate research that supports their members and covers their professional challenges. Authors who want to influence or become thought and practice leaders must publish where they will be read by those same kinds of people and all the rest who rely on them for guidance.

Looking back over 100 years in Journal AWWA shows that the field has always been crowded. And whether or not AWWA publishes novel research, it has historically tracked important affairs in the water sector, even before it was really a sector. In fact, when Journal AWWA was published quarterly circa the 1920s, it sometimes dedicated the last 50 pages to cover “Abstracts of Water Works Literature,” which often included 100 or more abstracts from other journals and magazines.

This is a crowded space for a reason: water is critical to our lives as well as our society and the environment. There is always something new going on—a novel challenge, development, innovation, or regulation that confronts our status quo. AWWA intends to continue providing peer review for pertinent research in AWWA Water Science , and the best way to stay up to date is to subscribe to the table of contents e‐mail alerts. Follow the links, save the articles you should keep in your files, and make sure you stay current with all facets of the water industry.

This month's Journal AWWA features a range of topics, including corrosion control, communication and context, conservation, and construction. Please consider sharing your perspectives and experiences with water professionals everywhere by writing me at journaleditor@awwa.org.
