The stabilization process in the remediation of vanadium-contaminated soil by attapulgite, zeolite and hydroxyapatite

Abstract Different additions of attapulgite, zeolite and hydroxyapatite were applied in vanadium (V)-contaminated soil to investigate and compare their stable efficiencies to vanadium. The results of the stabilization experiments showed that the optimal amounts of passivators were 2%, and their performance was as follows: attapulgite > hydroxyphosphate > zeolite. The highest stable efficiencies of hydroxyphosphate, attapulgite, and zeolite on V in soil were 71.70%, 65.13%, and 41.95%, respectively. The passivation effects of these passivation agents were stable because their stable efficiencies of V could reach a relatively stable state after stabilization for 10 days, and neutral and acidic leaching conditions had little influence on the leaching contents of V. As the results of sequential extraction procedures indicated, the transformation from bioavailable V to residual fraction with the increasing addition of passivators was responsible for the growth stabilization in soils. Due to passivators, their stable efficiency of V had a significant positive correlation with soil pH value (Rattapulgite = 0.9532; Rzeolite = 0.8897; R hydroxyapatite = 0.9028). Therefore, changing the pH value of the soil was an important factor for V stabilization.
