Synthesis, Structure and Properties of Water-free Pentanitratoyttrate(III) Ionic Liquids

Abstract A series of new rare-earth ionic liquids, pentanitratoyttrate(III) ionic liquids (1–6), were prepared and fully characterized by 1H and 13CNMR, and IR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The crystal structure of di(1,2,3-trimethylimidazolium) pentanitratoyttrate (Complex 1) was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure features alternating arrangement of [MC1mim]+ cations and ten-coordinated [Y(NO3)5]2– hexadecahedrons. No disordered solvent or water is observed in the crystal lattices. The thermodynamic stability of the new complexes was investigated by TGA and DSC. Four of these yttrium-containing ionic liquids (Complexes 3–6) are typical room temperature ionic liquids. They show high thermal stability and liquidus range of over 300 °C.
